“Old Masters: New Masters” is a result of the collaboration between the Edinburgh College of Art and the National Gallery of Scotland’s Print Room. The focal point of my project was the collection of William McTaggart’s sketchbooks and the collection of decorative prints held in the Print Room. William Mc Taggart was a 19th century Scottish artist and he is mostly famous for his paintings but I got enchanted with his sketchbooks. These quite intimate pocket sketchbooks are scarred with time. They accompanied the artist’s work, research and escapades. In order to elevate the value of the sketchbooks I have designed and handmade six perfect, gold framed, decorative boxes – one for each book. The gold ornament derives from elements found in the decorative prints by Richard de Lalonde. The work was presented alongside another contemporary artist – Jonathan McFadden, in the cabinets of the National Gallery of Scotland in January 2009. The work is now part of the permanent collection of the Print Room.
